What is the Vienna Toy Library?
We are Vienna’s first and only toy library focused on environmentally conscious and financially accessible play for children aged 0–6. As a social enterprise, our mission is rooted in social and environmental responsibility. We believe in people over profit, and we’re committed to fighting for a sustainable future for our children.
How Does It Work?
Once you become a member, you’ll have access to our online catalogue where you can reserve toys. The number of toys you can borrow depends on your membership type. Members may borrow between 2 to 6 toys for as long as they like. After reserving toys, just select a date, time, and pick-up location. When you're ready to return them, you can log in again to choose a return time and location and reserve your next set of toys.
Why Use a Toy Library?
Kids often lose interest in their toys quickly. To keep them engaged, many parents buy new toys regularly—leading to cluttered homes and a lot of waste. Sadly, 80% of toys end up in landfills, incinerators, or the ocean. In France alone, over 40 million toys are thrown away each year. In a UK survey, almost a third of parents admitted to discarding toys in good condition simply because their child was done with them. (Robertson-Fall, 2021)
By letting families borrow and return toys, we help extend the life of each toy, reduce the need for new production, and lower the environmental impact.
Are Your Services Available Year-Round?
We're a small family-run library, so we take a few short breaks throughout the year.
These will always be announced well in advance, giving you time to exchange your toys beforehand if needed. During our break, you can keep any rented toys.

What are Hot Items?
Hot Items are toys that are in especially high demand—often because they’re harder to find or more costly to add to our collection. To make sure everyone gets a fair chance to enjoy them, we limit how many Hot Items each membership level can borrow: Starter (0), Adventurer (1), and Trailblazer (2). These limits help prevent anyone from holding onto too many at once, while also reflecting the higher costs of acquiring and maintaining these special toys—something our upgraded memberships directly help support.
Why Is The Website In English If You’re Based In Vienna?
We’re just getting started, and keeping the website in one language helps us save time and focus on growing the library. Translating every update and new toy into German would take a lot of extra work, but it’s something we may consider in the future.
If you’d prefer to write to us in German, that’s absolutely fine — and we’ll always do our best to accommodate. Many browsers also make it easy to translate the site instantly if you’d like to view it in German.
Why is there a 48-hour minimum before pickup?
We prep each toy (cleaning, checking parts, packing). A 48-hour lead time lets us get everything ready and avoids last-minute issues.
Why is there a 10-day maximum (240 hours) for reserving?
When a toy is reserved, it’s blocked for everyone else but still stored with us until pickup. Allowing month-long reservations would make toys sit unused. A 10-day cap keeps toys circulating while still giving plenty of planning time. (In practice, you’ll always have about an 8-day “bookable” window for any given event.)
I see an event but can’t reserve it—why?
There are three possibilities:
Too early: Reservations for this event open on the date/time shown.
Reservations closed: The booking window has passed for this event.
Event ended: This pickup event already took place.
Why are only certain days available?
Pickups are on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and the first Saturday of each month. On other days, we don’t run pickup events, so reservations aren’t possible for those dates.
Can You Send Me a Reminder About Pickup Events?
Yes! We know family life can get a little hectic. That’s why we’ll send you an email 48 hours before your scheduled pickup if you have toys to collect or return.
What If I Don’t Want These Reminders?
No worries — you’re in control. Just head to your account settings and adjust your notification preferences at any time. One click and you won’t hear from us about reminders until you want to again.
None of the Exchange Times Work for Me. What Can I Do?
Send us a DM or email. We review demand and may add times in future schedules based on your feedback.
I've Booked a Pick-Up Date But Now I Can't Make It. What Do I Do?
Hey, we get it. We’re parents too. Life happens and things come up. Just send us a message through our contact form and we’ll work something out.
How Do You Clean Your Toys?
We inspect all returned toys and clean them thoroughly before they go back into circulation. Our standard cleaning procedure follows EU guidelines. You can view the full policy on our website.
Where Do You Get Your Toys From?
To keep our environmental footprint small, we prioritize good-quality second-hand toys sourced through donations and reuse platforms. As the Sustainable Development Goals Report 2023 points out, the material footprint in high-income countries is 10 times higher than in low-income countries. By extending the life of existing toys, we help reduce demand for new ones.
What Happens If We Damage or Lose a Toy?
Our Damaged & Lost Toy Policy is available on our website. That said, we understand kids can be rough with their toys. We’ll always do our best to be flexible while still protecting our collection.
Why Do I Need to Pay a Security Deposit?
We ask members to pay a €30 refundable deposit when signing up. This helps protect us in case toys aren’t returned. If your membership ends and all toys are returned in good condition, we refund the deposit in full.
Can I Upgrade My Membership?
Yes, upgrading is easy! We’ll cancel your current subscription and send you a link to join the higher tier. Any unused value from your old plan will be credited as extra days on your new plan, so you won’t lose anything.
Can I Downgrade My Membership?
Yes. If you’d like to move to a lower tier, we’ll cancel your current subscription and you can resubscribe at the cheaper level when your current month ends. Please return any toys that aren’t included in the new plan (extra slots, hot items, or new items) before the switch.
How Do I Get My Deposit Back?
You can request your deposit back whenever you like, as long as you don’t have any toys currently reserved or borrowed. We’ll check that everything is returned in good condition, and then refund your deposit (minus any deductions for missing or damaged toys).
How Do I Cancel My Membership?
You can cancel at any time. Your membership stays active until the end of the period you’ve already paid for, so you can keep borrowing toys until then.
